Teen phenom Connor Bedard is one of the brightest prospects in the NHL, but he came up against a wily veteran in Minnesota Wild goalie Marc-Andre Fleury Thursday evening.
With the Wild and Chicago Blackhawks finishing 2-2 after overtime, the game went to a shootout. Bedard – picked No. 1 by Chicago in the 2023 draft – took the home team’s first shot after Mats Zuccarello scored for the Wild.
Bedard deked and faked his way towards Fleury, only to find the Wild keeper unmoved, and as Bedard neared his fellow Canadian, a poke check from the veteran goalie sent the rookie sprawling.
It was a true “welcome to big leagues, kid” moment from Fleury to the 18-year-old, who is more than half his age.
