Earlier this month Timberwolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders told KFAN-FM 100.3 that he wanted to meet with Nikola Pekovic as soon as possible to start working out a contract extension.
Plans were made for the two to meet, but “didn’t work out,” according to Saunders who chatted with the Pioneer Press on Wednesday.
Pekovic is training in Europe, and isn’t expected to meet with Saunders before the free agency period begins July 1.
Pekovic, who averaged 16.3 points and 8.8 rebounds in 62 games last season, is a restricted free agent, so the Wolves can match any offer he receives.
“He knows where we’re at,” Saunders said. “Now it’s just a matter of when the time comes, we’ll sit down and deal with that and go through mostly his agent.”
