Former Minnesota Twins pitcher Carl Pavano says a freak snow shoveling accident at his Vermont home last month nearly killed him.
“I’m just lucky to be alive,” Pavano told the Star Tribune. “I was hours away from going into cardiac arrest and probably wouldn’t even be here.”
The 37-year-old had his spleen removed just hours before it may have been too late. During the operation, the newspaper says doctors drained 6 1/2 liters of blood from his chest cavity. Pavano was told he was living on “borrowed time.”
The righthander is a free-agent after playing 3 1/2 seasons with the Twins.
