St. Cloud native Nate Wolters finally got the call he was looking for Thursday night.
Wolters, a 6-5 point guard for South Dakota State, was selected No. 38 overall in the NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards, but was then dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers who then shipped him to the Milwaukee Bucks in another trade.
Bucknell’s Mike Muscala, who played for Roseville Area High School, was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the 44th overall pick.
Before the draft, Muscala told the Pioneer Press that if he and Wolters got picked, it should a signal to the rest of the country that prep basketball is alive and well in Minnesota.
“I think the Minnesota high school hoops scene is underrated in general,” Muscala said.
Former Gophers Trevor Mbakwe (St. Paul) and Rodney Williams (Minneapolis) were not selected Thursday night. It’s the ninth consecutive year a Gopher wasn’t selected in the NBA draft. The last was Kris Humphries in 2004.
Williams recently told the Star Tribune that if he doesn’t get drafted, he’ll definitely consider playing overseas.
“Anything to help me get to my dream,” he said. “So if that’s going to have to be overseas for a couple years — then so be it.”
