Former Gophers wide receiver and quarterback MarQueis Gray hopes to catch on in the NFL behind center, the Pioneer Press reports.
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Gophers senior says he will work out at the NFL Scouting Combine Sunday, and not at receiver or tight end.
Gray spent last season with the Gophers playing either quarterback or receiver.
The Pioneer Press says the changing nature of the NFL, coupled with Gray’s size and speed, may be appealing to teams who want to adopt to the sort of read-option schemes that propelled the 49ers, Redskins and Seahawks to the playoffs this past season.
Gray, who started 2012 at quarterback, eventually became a passing target for Phillip Nelson, a true freshman player who started the final six games for the Gophers.
Gray was named the Gophers’ team MVP for the second consecutive year in November.
