The Minnesota Lynx announced on Monday that they have waived guard Rachel Banham, ending a homecoming for the Lakeville native and Gopher legend.
Banham had a legendary career at the University of Minnesota where she scored 3,093 career points ranking first in Gopher and Big Ten history and sixth in NCAA history.
She was selected fourth overall by the Connecticut Sun in the 2016 WNBA Draft but averaged 4.5 points per game while only seeing the floor for 11 minutes per night during her first four seasons.
A February 2020 trade to Minnesota helped give Banham an increased role and she showed improvement playing in 20 games (one start) with 6.9 points in 17 minutes per game during the 2020 season.
But the Lynx developed a crowded backcourt with the addition of 2020 WNBA Rookie of the Year Crystal Dangerfield and the signing of Kayla McBride this past offseason. With minutes hard to come by, Banham played 14 games with the Lynx this season averaging 4.4 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.
The Lynx are 7-7 on the season and will visit the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night.
