Michael Floyd’s status with the Vikings is solidified as safe unless he was lying about kombucha being the cause for his positive alcohol tests while on house arrest last month.
Floyd failed multiple random breath tests during the final days of his 120-day home confinement sentence. He was on house arrest after pleading guilty to extreme DUI after an incident last year while playing for the Arizona Cardinals. The St. Paul native blamed the presence of alcohol in his system on the large amounts of kombucha tea he claimed to be drinking.
“Do I believe it? I don’t know how much tea he drank. I have no clue,” head coach Mike Zimmer told Brian Murphy of the Pioneer Press. “I don’t have any doubt why there’d be skepticism, but he told me that he wasn’t [drinking]. That it was legit.”
Zimmer’s words to Floyd were even more direct: “I said, ‘If I find out you’re lying to me, I’m going to cut you,'” said Zimmer, per the St. Paul newspaper.
Cutting Floyd might be easier said than done unless the encouraging things being said about second-year wide receiver Laquon Treadwell ring true.
Floyd is unlikely to have much of an impact early in the season because he’s likely facing a minimum two-game suspension, which could vault as high as 10 games. More on his suspension status here.
