After Wedneday’s 11-1 win over the White Sox, and the Indians’ doubleheader sweep of the Yankees, the Twins are suddenly just one game behind the Yankees for the first Wild Card in the American League.
There are two Wild Card teams. The first Wild card team hosts the second in a one-game playoff, with the winner advancing to face the No. 1 seed in a best-of-five series, also known as the American League Divisional Series.
As the New York Post says this morning, “You like the way your season’s going? Give it a few days. Don’t like it? Same rule.”
That’s exactly how the season has gone for the Twins. When they’re up, fans are joyed. When they’re down, fans think it’s over. But with 30 games to go the Twins are in a really good position to hold down a playoff spot via one of the two wild cards.
Minnesota was 45-43 at the All-Star break. Then they lost 13 of 20 to start the second half and found themselves at 52-56 on after a loss on Aug. 5.
Then they flipped the switch.
Minnesota’s 17-7 record since Aug. 6 is tied with the Indians for the best mark in the American League, 4 1/2 games better than the Yankees and 7 1/2 games better than the AL-leading Astros.
