The Wolves are living the good life now that they have a requisite shooting guard for the first time in franchise history.
The offseason signing of Kevin Martin has been far better than expected. While it’s early in the season, Martin’s ability to score and shoot from the perimeter has provided the Wolves with a major boost.
If not for Kevin Love already playing in Minnesota, Martin never would have considered signing with the Wolves.
“After playing with Kevin (Durant) and Russell (Westbrook), guys that can score 30 in their sleep, I wouldn’t go to another team without a superstar,” Martin, who played for Oklahoma City last season, told the Pioneer Press. “That’s what I have in Kevin Love.”
Entering Wednesday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Martin was sixth in the NBA in scoring, averaging a robust 24.6 points a game — good for second on the team behind Love, who is second in the NBA at 26.4 points a game. Martin’s best single-season scoring average was 24.6 points with the Sacramento Kings in 2008-09. He’s finished with an average of 20-plus points six times in his 11-year career.
Martin’s 55.8 percent clip from three-point range ranks seventh in the league. His 24 made three-pointers is tied with Warriors sharpshooters Steph Curry and Klay Thompson for second in the NBA.
