Since the inception of the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1989, the quest for a true center has been never ending.
From Luc Longley, to Ervin Johnson, to Loren Woods, the list goes on of hapless seven footers that have gotten lots of time but produced little results. Of course Kevin Garnett was one of the best power forwards in the history of basketball, but was exactly that, a power forward, not a true center.
So today at Target Center, the search for solutions in the middle continues, with the Wolves hosting a bevy of big men looking to impress Flip Saunders and Co. enough to either be their 9th or 26th picks in the NBA draft on June 27.
Indiana’s second team All-American Cody Zeller headlines the list, he’ll have a solo workout after the other four centers have a group session with the team. Those four are Steven Adams of Pittsburgh, 7’2″ Rudy Gobert out of France, Akron’s Zeke Marshall, and two-time Patriot League player of the year and St Louis Park native Mike Muscala from Bucknell.
Louisville’s Gorgiu Dieng, Gonzaga’s Kelly Olynyk, and Maryland’s Alex Len are the other centers projected in the first round by many sources, will not be in attendance and have not worked out for the team to this point.
The Wolves also hosted a workout featuring Kentavious Caldwell-Pope at the end of May.
