The evolving dynamic duo of Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins fueled the Wolves to a 113-101 win over the Spurs Wednesday night, Minnesota’s first in San Antonio since 2013.
Wiggins, starting at point guard on a regular basis with Jeff Teague accepting a role as a key player off the bench, finished with 26 points, eight rebounds and a pair of assists, while Towns scored an efficient 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting with 14 rebounds and six assists.
Towns also hit a trio of threes, giving him 10 straight games with at least three 3-pointers. The 7-footer entered play Wednesday averaging 4.0 threes per game, good for second in the NBA only behind Houston’s James Harden (4.6 per game).
Minnesota led by 10 at the half only to see Demar Derozan bank a floater off the glass to give the Spurs a 92-91 lead with … left in the fourth quarter, which is precisely when the Wolves started a …. run to close the game.
Note: Keita Bates-Diop continues to shine for the Wolves off the bench. The 2018 second-round draft pick finished with 16 points, including hitting 4-of-6 threes. Minnesota hit 18-of-40 threes (43.6%) in the game.
At 10-8, the Wolves get a holiday break before returning home to face the Grizzlies Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
