Timberwolves general manager Milt Newton discussed Kevin Love’s future with the team on Thursday.
Newton told the Pioneer Press the Wolves intend to keep Love. But if that isn’t possible, Newton said, “You best believe that we will be a better team based on what happens.”
Trade rumors have been floating again, since the New York Daily News reported Love told the Wolves he intends to exercise an opt-out clause and pursue free agency at the end of next season.
Newton told reporters the team still has a great relationship with Love, but will do what is best for the franchise.

Love is squarely in the drivers’ seat though. The Wolves wouldn’t have to trade him, as they can hope a playoff appearance next season would be enough to convince him to stay.
If the Wolves do not trade Love, he can choose to become an unrestricted free agent and opt out of his contract, at the end of the season.
The Bleacher Report took a look at several of the suitors for Love. Many of the teams considering a deal for Love would have a tough time coming up with enough compensation to acquire Love, while surrounding him with enough talent to be part of a contender.
According to the article, Houston would be both a logical and feasible landing spot for Love. No team has more “pros” and less “cons” than the Rockets.
It’s not hard to see all the advantages. James Harden is one of the best offensive players in basketball. Dwight Howard is the rim-protecting, defensive-minded center Love needs to be paired with. Houston has all of their future first-round picks, and a general manager in Daryl Morey that knows how to use them. The Rockets play a style that fits Love’s abilities, as they want to run and shoot threes.
There’s no state tax in Texas, which means Love can earn more in Houston than he can elsewhere. This is a young team with stars in or near their primes, alongside valuable role players (Patrick Beverley, Chandler Parsons, Terrence Jones) that are on cheap deals for the time being.
There are plenty of assets to trade right now, and once OmerAsik and Jeremy Lin’s deals expire, the Rockets could have max cap space, depending on what happens with Parsons.
The Sports World Report says Chicago, Boston, Golden State, Phoenix, the Knicks and the Lakers are also expected to make an attempt to acquire Love.
