The Minnesota Timberwolves have fired head coach/president Tom Thibodeau, according to reports from The Athletic and ESPN.

The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski adds that assistant coach Ryan Saunders will take over as the interim head coach. Saunders is the son of former Wolves head coach Flip Saunders, who died after a battle with cancer in 2015.

Minnesota defeated the Lakers 108-86 on Sunday at Target Center, with the news of Thibodeau’s demise coming shortly after the victory.
The Wolves have had a very bumpy season, starting with offseason drama following Jimy Butler’s every step and word, leading to a trade that brought Robert Covington and Dario Saric to Minnesota and Butler to Philadelphia.
The Wolves started the season 4-9 with Butler on the roster, then won nine of the next 12 before spiraling downward with nine loss in their most recent 15 games.
Also let go was assistant coach Andy Greer, according to the Star Tribune’s Christopher Hine, who notes that General Manager Scott Layden is still employed.
