Minnesota Timberwolves player Dante Cunningham was arrested in Wayzata this morning on suspicion of domestic assault, as reported by FOX 9.
Cunningham was booked into the Hennepin County jail at 6:14 a.m., according to details provided by the jail. Charges have not been filed and he is being held without bail.
The Star Tribune offered further detail on the situation.
Police arrived at Cunningham’s residence on Medina Road about 4 a.m. and met with a woman who also lives there who had “marks of a physical domestic [altercation]” on her body,” said Police Chief Ed Belland. The woman did not require medical treatment, the chief added.
The Timberwolves issued the following statement regarding the arrest.
“We are aware of the matter involving Dante Cunningham and are in the process of gathering more information. Dante will not be traveling with the team to Miami this afternoon. The Minnesota Timberwolves organization takes the matter very seriously and does not condone the type of behavior that is associated with this situation. However, we need to let the legal process run its course, and will have further comment at the appropriate time.”
Cunningham is averaging six points and four rebounds per game this season. He scored five points and grabbed three rebounds in Minnesota’s 102-88 win over his former team, the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday.
Before the game, Memphis head coach Dave Joerger referred to Cunningham as a “wonderful human being and a terrific basketball player,” according to the Pioneer Press.
The 26-year-old forward is set to become a free agent this offseason.
