The Minnesota Wild wrapped up an entertaining weekend of training camp with an intrasquad scrimmage on Sunday.
Hockey Wilderness defined the scrimmage as fast, intense scrimmage gave fans plenty of reasons to be hopeful for a successful 2013-14 season.
Head coach Mike Yeo was very impressed with former first-round draft pick, Nino Niederreiter. Yeo says Niederreiter “just screams NHL player.”
New Wild winger Matt Cooke had a goal and assist in the scrimmage. He’s not known as a scorer, but that’s only because his past thuggery overshadows his offensive ability.
“We’ve said this since we signed him, there’s a reason why he’s here,” Yeo said told the Pioneer Press. “He’s more than probably what is advertised or what the perception might be for him. He’s a good player. He’s got speed, he’s got the ability to make plays and he’s got the ability to help other guys get to their game and help provide some secondary offense.”
Jason Pominville also scored. Zach Parise says Wild fans didn’t get a chance to see how good Pominville is because Pominville got hurt last year.
Michael Russo called Pominville a “totally underrated” player that will help the Wild’s top line tremendously this season. He’s expected to skate alongside Parise and Mikko Koivu.
The Wild starts their exhibition schedule Tuesday against the St. Louis Blues.
