With only about two months before the start of the NHL season Patrick Roy has stunned the Colorado Avalanche, stepping down as the team’s coach and Vice President of Hockey operations.
Roy issued his own statement about the decision.

The former Avalanche goaltender took over as their head coach prior to the 2013-14 season and led the Avalanche to a 52-win season and a return to the playoffs, where Colorado was beaten by the Wild.
However, Colorado did not return to the playoffs in either of the last two seasons and NBC Sports notes that Roy was critical of the team’s core following last season, saying the group needed to show more leadership.
NHL training camps open in about a month, so the Avs will have to move quickly.
