The Minnesota Wild fell in a shootout on Saturday night to Colorado 3-2.
The Avalanche got out to a commanding two goal lead after the first two periods, 2-0. Colorado had goals from Gabriel Landeskog in the first period and Nathan MacKinnon in the second period to take the lead.
That lead lasted until late in the third period when the Wild fought back.
With a little under 3-and-a-half minutes to play Matt Cooke scored his fourth goal of the season to cut the Avalanche lead to one at 2-1.
Then with just seconds to play Mikko Koivu sent a wrist shot passed Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov to tie the game at two and force overtime. Varlamov finished with 35 saves in the game.
Minnesota dominated the third period outshooting the Avalanche 11-3, and 37-25 for the game.
Neither team scored in overtime, and then in the shootout Ryan O’Reilly picked up the only shootout goal to clinch the win for the Avalanche.
By forcing the shootout though the Wild still pick up a point. The Wild host the Flyers on Monday.
