The Minnesota Wild are once again looking to lock up one of their top talents for the long term, this time in the form of Minnesota newcomer Jason Pominville.
GM Chuck Fletcher has reportedly reached out to the 30-year old Pominville about extending his contract beyond the 2013-14 season, which is when his deal expires.
The Wild already have plenty of money tied up in Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, who signed 13-year deals last offseason, as well as Mikko Koivu, who is locked up through the 2017-18 season.
Between the three, Minnesota will shell out nearly $250 million should each be with the Wild for the life of their contracts, unlikely as that may seem.
That’s not stopping Fletcher, though, as he reportedly would like to ink Pominville to a cheaper contract soon so the right wing doesn’t hold Minnesota over the coals next offseason for money they don’t have to spend. The club would risk losing the highly thought of Pominville for nothing in that scenario.
Pominville has 10 regular season games under his belt with the club and put up nine points in those contests, while playing in two of the Wild’s playoff tilts against the Blackhawks after taking an elbow to the head at the end of the regular season that sidelined him going into the postseason.
He played his entire career with the Sabres before being acquired by Minnesota last season, putting up six 20+ goal seasons in his time in Buffalo.
