The Minnesota Wild had won six of seven entering tonight’s contest against Washington, but lost 3-2 in a shootout against the Capitals.
Capitals superstar winger Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring, but Minnesota answered back with two goals and it looked like the Wild would win their seventh in eight times out.
Instead, Washington center Marcus Johannson scored with 3:08 left in the third period to send the game to overtime.
Neither side could find a goal, so it went to a shootout, where it took only Nicklas Backstrom finding the back of the net, Washington’s Nicklas Backstrom not Minnesota’s Niklas Backstrom, to end things, as Minnesota went 0-for-3 attempting to take the extra point.
Minnesota’s two goals were provided by Charlie Coyle, his first of the year, and Mikael Granlund, who found the back of the net for the second time this season.
Minnesota returns to the ice Saturday, as they visit the Carolina Hurricanes.
