Wild head coach John Hynes has been named the head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Hockey Team.
Hynes’ U.S. team will compete at upcoming IIHF World Championships in Ostrava/Prague, Czechia May 10-26.
“We’re fortunate to have John leading our team,” said Brett Peterson, general manager of the 2024 U.S. Men’s National Team. “His passion and energy, coupled with his vast experience, including on the world stage, will certainly serve us well in our efforts to bring back gold to the United States.”
Hynes took over the Wild in November after the team parted ways with Dean Evason. Under Hynes the Wild had a 34-24-5 record but missed the playoffs, falling 11 points short of the final wild card spot.
The 49-year-old coach has previously served as a coach for the U.S. National Team in 2016 and 2019. He also was head coach for the U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Teams that won gold in 2006, silver in 2004 and bronze in 2008 at the Under-18’s World Championships. As head coach of USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program, Hynes posted a 216-113-19-9 overall record.
