Minnesota Wild assistant coach Darryl Sydor has been charged with two counts of DWI
According to Anoka County jail records, the 43-year-old former NHL defenseman was taken into custody late Thursday afternoon, with the Associated Press reporting his blood-alcohol level tested at 0.30.
The Star Tribune reports he was charged Friday afternoon with two counts of second-degree driving while impaired, both gross misdemeanors.
According to FOX 9, police said Sydor’s son was in the car at the time – they were heading to a hockey game.
The Wild released a statement saying:
“We are aware of the reports regarding Darryl Sydor. We are continuing to gather information and will have further comment at the appropriate time.”
KSTP reports Sydor was arrested on Highway 65 and Medtronic Boulevard. He failed a field sobriety test, Fridley Police Department Lt. Mike Monsrud told the station.
According to the Star Tribune, Sydor had previously acknowledged problems with alcohol, which included talking about a rehabilitation stint last year.
Sydor is in his fourth season as an assistant with the Wild, according to the team’s website, and was also on the staff of head coach Mike Yeo with the Houston Aeros for the 2010-11 season.
The Edmonton native played 18 seasons in the NHL and was twice named an All-Star, before retiring in 2010. He’s married with four children.
