Stop us if you’ve heard this before: In an inaugural event, Minnesota goalie Adam Wilcox stood on his head to lead Minnesota to a successful weekend, and was named the Big Ten’s Third Star of the Week today.
Those words could apply to two weeks ago as well as today.
On January 12 and 13, Wilcox stopped Penn State in their tracks, leading Minnesota to 3-2 and 5-2 victories in the Gophers first-ever series against the Nittany Lions.
This past weekend, Wilcox shut down No. 5 St. Cloud State in the Gophers 4-1, opening round win of the North Star College Cup, while stoning Minnesota-Duluth in a shootout Saturday after stopping 38 Bulldog shots in regulation and overtime.
The shootout victory (officially a tie outside of tournament results) clinched the inaugural title for Minnesota, and Wilcox was named tournament MVP for his efforts between the pipes.
The sophomore goalie is tied for second in the nation with 17 victories against just two losses and four ties, while Minnesota remains No. 1 in the USCHO.com national poll this week.
