Andrew Wiggins is staring $25 million a year in the face and it appears that it’s just a matter of time before he gets it.
Wiggins, 22, and the Wolves are in contract talks on a deal that would pay him a maximum of $148 million over five years, ESPN reported last month. If the Wolves lowball Wiggins they can expect him to reject it
“Nothing less,” Wiggins told The Crossover when asked if he thinks he deserves a max deal.
Per ESPN, the Wolves have until one day before the 2017-18 season begins to reach an extension with Wiggins. If they fail to do so Wiggins will play the season knowing he’ll reach restricted free agency next July.
As a restricted free agent, Wiggins would be in a position to receive max offers from teams from any team the league, with which the Wolves would have the right to match.
Minnesota has the right to play out the 2017-18 season and extend a $9.8 million qualifying offer to Wiggins, which he’d surely reject knowing far more money would await in free agency.
