Josh Willingham’s brilliant start to the season continued Friday night in the Twins’ 5-4 win over Tampa Bay. Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, Willingham smacked a three-run double to give the Twins the lead. The double extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games.
The top of the Twins lineup was very effective as Denard Span, Jamey Carroll and Joe Mauer finished with two hits. Mauer drove in the first two runs of the game, giving him nine RBI this season.
Liam Hendriks pitched five very strong innings before allowing four runs in the sixth. The bullpen took over to shut down the Rays, who were finished off by Matt Capps in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
