On Thursday evening, it appeared the Twins were on the verge of acquiring Jamie Garcia of the Atlanta Braves.
However it’s nearly been 24 hours and no deal has been made – here’s a timeline of the events from when the news first broke that the Twins were going after Garcia.
How’d we get here?
Thursday, July 21, 5:51 p.m. Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports was the first to report the Twins were “close” to acquiring the left-handed starter.
6:11 p.m. MLB.com’s Rhett Bollinger said Minnesota would be sending a minor leaguer in return to Atlanta but they were waiting on medical assessments.
6:30 p.m. Shortly after, Jon Morosi reported the Twins reached an agreement, according his sources.
8:23 p.m. Twins were likely to take on the remaining $4.7 million of Garcia’s contract, according to Darren Wolfson of KSTP.
Friday, July 21 9:22 a.m. Mark Feinsand says no deal is done and other teams have joined talks to acquire Garcia.
2:35 p.m. Bob Nightendale of USA Today Sports reports Garcia will start for Atlanta on Friday.
Now what?
Atlanta did call up an arm from Triple-A to make a spot start if Garcia is indeed traded, before the team’s first pitch at 8 p.m CT against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Both teams can obviously still work out a trade, but the fact that other teams have now joined in on the talks makes things stickier for the Twins.
Until then, the Twins can continue to explore other pitching options as the MLB trade deadline isn’t until July 31st.
