There doesn’t seem to be as many position battles as there have been in years past, but there are a few worth watching over the final two weeks of the preseason.
The battle attracting the most attention is the fight for the fifth wide receiver spot, presumably between Joe Webb and Stephen Burton.
Daily Norseman gives Burton the nod at this point, but he doesn’t offer the position flexibility that the former quarterback Webb does.
Yahoo! Sports contributor Dennis Parsons predicts the Vikings will keep six receivers. Greg Jennings, Cordarrelle Patterson, Jerome Simpson, Jarius Wright, Burton and Greg Childs, who would start the season on the physically unable to perform list.
Whether Webb, Burton or another player makes the team as the fifth wideout, they’ll have to contribute on special teams. Vikings.com reports that special teams coordinator Mike Priefer referred to Webb as “a work in progress.”
