Former Viking Joe Webb has signed with the Carolina Panthers as a quarterback.
The Panthers announced the signing on their website Friday afternoon.
“Joe had a strong workout for us today. He is a young player who intrigues us and has a similar skill set to Cam (Newton),” said Carolina Coach Ron Rivera. “With Cam sidelined for the spring, it is an opportunity to get a good evaluation of Joe as well as Matt Blanchard, who was on our practice squad last year.”

Newton underwent ankle surgery on Wednesday and is expected to be sidelined for around four months. The Panthers also re-signed quarterback Derek Anderson, who will continue as Newton’s primary backup.
If the Panthers like what they see in Webb he could give them a backup whose skills more closely match Newton’s than Anderson, according to Pro Football Talk.
Webb was drafted by the Vikings in the sixth round of the 2010 draft. In four years with the Vikings he played games at quarterback and wide receiver.
He was moved to receiver in 2013 and caught just five passes for 33 yards.
As a quarterback with the Vikings Webb had his moments. The Star Tribune recalls a strong Tuesday performance in Philadelphia in 2011, but after struggling while replacing an injured Christian Ponder at QB in a playoff loss to Green Bay following the 2012 season, Webb was moved back to wide receiver.
