The Minnesota Twins turned a triple play in the third inning of Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Royals, helping to get Bailey Ober out of a jam and preserve an early lead.
With the Twins up 1-0, the Royals led off the third inning with singles from Jarod Dyson and Cam Gallagher. With two men on, Nicky Lopez attempted to move both runners over with a bunt but things went terribly wrong.

Lopez’s bunt went straight into the air and was caught by first baseman Miguel Sanó. After tossing to Andrelton Simmons at second base for the second out, Simmons ran back Gallagher to first base and threw to Nick Gordon to complete the Twins’ first triple play since August of 2019.

Sunday’s triple play marks the 15th triple play in Twins history. If all goes right, this will help the Twins salvage a series split with the Royals.
