The Minnesota Vikings unveiled their plans for their new team headquarters in Eagan on Friday.
That plan, if approved, would contain a mix of retail, a hotel, a small stadium and even some multi-family housing as part of its expansive 185 acre-site just off Interstate 494 and Dodd Road.
The team has signed a deal to relocate from its Winter Park facility in Eden Prairie to the former Northwest Airlines headquarters, which has been largely vacant since the airline merged its operations with Delta in Atlanta.
So what does this all mean for the Vikings? ESPN’s Ben Goessling says he sees three major takeaways from it.
- Vikings have a state of the art practice facility and stadium for the first time in history
- The end of training camp in Mankato
- About 25 percent of the land the Vikings are purchasing being used for the complex with the rest developed by the Wilfs – meaning they are less likely to quickly try and sell the team.

According to the Pioneer Press, the plan will require some cooperation with local government in Eagan. The proposal includes potential uses for the site that are both consistent with the current major office designation and some that also fall outside of that designation meaning it would require an amendment to the current land use.
“While the City of Eagan is excited about the prospect of welcoming the Vikings organization to the community, both the City and the Vikings are in the early stages of considering the opportunities for the site on which the Vikings are completing due diligence, near I-494,” the city said in a statement issued Friday.
The city’s planning commission is holding a public hearing to consider the amendment to its comprehensive guide plan during a Sept. 21 meeting.
The city council is expected to vote on the matter on Oct. 6.
