Free agency could be an exciting time for the Minnesota Vikings. The team has plenty of holes to fill and more than $30 million dollars in salary cap space.
As the days tick down to the March 11 start of free agency, the Vikings are reported to be looking specifically at one candidate to help fill a hole in the secondary.
The Pioneer Press reports the Vikings will take a strong look at Miami Dolphins cornerback Nolan Carroll. Carroll, 27, has played all four of his seasons in the NFL with the Dolphins.
He appeared in all 16 games last year, starting 12 and finished third on the team with three interceptions.
According to Pro Football Talk, points out the Vikings secondary was problematic all season, and while cornerback Xavier Rhodes and safety Harrison Smith will feature prominently, the other spots are less certain.
Carroll is expected to be on the open market, despite Miami’s interest in bringing him back. Pro Football Talk notes he has started 22 games in the last two seasons and is looking for a salary range that befits a starting role in the future.
There is a connection to Carroll as well. Miami’s linebackers coach the last two years, George Edwards, is now the Vikings’ defensive coordinator.
Also, Wednesday the Vikings tendered a contract to reserve running back Matt Asiata. The Star Tribune reports Asiata will receive the third-year veteran minimum salary of $570,000.
Asiata made his first career start last season in Week 15 against Philadelphia and recorded a career-best three touchdowns. He also ran for 115 yards in the season finale against the Detroit Lions, his first career 100-yard rushing game.
The Star Tribune says Asiata will also be given a chance to compete as Adrian Peterson’s backup in training camp.
