With the Minnesota Vikings’ plans for running back in the 2023 season still not fully realized, it’s been reported that they made an attempt to sign David Montgomery during free agency.
Montgomery left the Chicago Bears to sign with the Detroit Lions, but the Chicago Tribune reports that both the Bears and the Vikings made an offer to the veteran.
Montgomery agreed a three-year, $18 million deal with the Lions, of which $8.75 million is fully guaranteed at signing, with $2.25 million guaranteed if he is still there next year.
The revelation provides another indication that the Vikings are considering changes at running back, with Dalvin Cook’s future still uncertain.
The Vikings re-signed last year’s backup Alexander Mattison to a two-year, $7 million deal last month, but that happened around the same time that Montgomery signed with the Lions, so it’s technically possible that they were trying to bring Montgomery in as a backup.
As for Cook, OverTheCap reports that if the Vikings cut Cook before June 1 they’ll save about $5.9 million, while he costs the team a $8.2 million dead cap hit. But that’s cheaper than the $14.1 million cap hit he’ll cost the Vikings if he stays on his current contract.
There were reports earlier in the year that the Vikings had received a trade offer for the 28 year old.
