Even though the Vikings have plenty of questions about their group of wide receivers, they’ve released veteran Michael Jenkins.
Jenkins was due a roster bonus of $2.425 million on March 16 — a chunk of money the Vikings clearly didn’t want to pay.
Jenkins finished the 2012 season with 40 catches for 449 yards and two touchdowns.
Ben Goessling reports the Vikings now have enough cap space to pursue a big name free agent. The two marquee wide receivers, according to Goessling, are Mike Wallace and Greg Jennings.
Meanwhile, the Vikings — like most other NFL teams — passed on using the franchise tag on any of their unrestricted free agents. The Pioneer Press reports that right tackle Phil Loadholt was the top candidate to receive the tag, but it would have paid him more than $9 million next season — the average of the five highest paid players in the league at his position.
The Vikings also announced some minor coaching changes on Monday. The Pioneer Press has the report.
