In a surprise move, the Vikings have released cornerback Antoine Winfield.
Winfield was due $7.25 million in the last year of his contract, according to the Star Tribune.
In an afternoon news conference, Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said releasing Winfield, 35, was “a business decision,” but kept the door open for his possible return.
Last month, NBC Sports reported that the Vikings wanted Winfield to play less downs in 2013.
