This wasn’t the way Vikings quarterback Taylor Heinicke was supposed to start his training camp.
Heinicke rolled into Vikings training camp at Minnesota State University – Mankato Thursday with his left leg in a cast.

The injury supposedly happened about 2 1/2 weeks ago at his home near Atlanta. According to the Pioneer Press, Heinicke suffered a cut above his left ankle that required surgery while he was attempting to break into his own house.
“I was locked out of my house after a late-night move,” Heinicke told the newspaper. “I came back and there’s no one home, and I’m trying to nudge the door a little. It was one of those double doors. I thought it just needed a little nudge. Me and my buddy were getting it going a little, but when I put my foot to the door, my foot kind of slipped and it went through the window.”
He is hoping to be ready to go by the Vikings regular-season opener in Tennessee on Sept. 11.

Heinicke acknowledged that the injury is more than a little embarrassing for him, but it’s also a major setback.
He came into camp as the Vikings No. 3 quarterback – and while he wasn’t going to challenge Teddy Bridgewater for the starting job, The Viking Age says Heinicke could have challenged Shaun Hill for the No. 2 spot.
The injury might also explain why the Vikings are thought to be a possible landing spot for free agent quarterback Nick Foles, who was released by the Rams.
The Vikings will release they physically unable to perform list on Friday.
