Trae Waynes won’t have to worry about his contract this year, because the Vikings have picked up their fifth-year club option to keep him around for the 2019 season.
According to Spotrac, that club option will pay the former first round draft choice $9 million in 2019.
That means Waynes will now make almost as much as all-pro Xavier Rhodes ($10.4 million) will in 2019.”
It’s a good sign that the Vikings are willing to commit that much money to Waynes after using their 2018 first round pick on Central Florida cornerback Mike Hughes.
Xavier Rhodes and Waynes are expected to be the top two corners in Mike Zimmer’s defense again next season, with Hughes and Mackenzie Alexander playing in nickel and dime packages.
Zimmer also said he’d like to give exotic looks by playing with four cornerbacks and one safety, presumably all-pro Harrison Smith, on the field together at the same time.

Waynes, who started all 16 games and finished with 2 interceptions and 11 passes defensed for the Vikings last season, is due to make $2.2 million in 2018.
