After spending Thursday at Fresno State’s pro day to watch quarterback Derek Carr sling passes all over the field, Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer, offensive coordinator Norv Turner and general manager Rick Spielman are expected to hold a private workout today with San Jose State quarterback David Fales, the Sacramento Bee reports.
Fales participated in San Jose State’s pro-day workout on Thursday. As advertised, he showed off incredible accuracy, completing 52 of 53 pass attempts. The one he missed on was a deep ball.
In 2012, Fales led the nation by completing 72.5 percent of his passes, just ahead of former West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, who was the second quarterback taken in last year’s NFL Draft (No. 39 overall to the New York Jets). Fales threw for 4,189 yards with 33 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while completing 64.1 percent of his passes last season. His yardage was good for fifth-best in the country, but it was nearly a 1,000 yards behind Carr, who led the nation in both passing yards (5,082) and touchdown passes (50).
Fales gave Minnesotans a taste of what he can do when San Jose State played the Golden Gophers at TCF Bank Stadium last fall. According to the Star Tribune, Spielman attended the game and watched Fales throw for 294 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first half alone. The Gophers won the game 43-24.
ESPN’s Ben Goessling writes that it isn’t a major surprise the Vikings are spending time with Fales because Spielman had planned to take a look at 10 different quarterbacks.
Turner was really impressed by Carr’s showing at his pro day, where he said only one of his 63 passes was off target.
“Obviously, he was very impressive today,” Turner said, via Pro Football Talk. “He came out and showed he has a strong arm, very accurate, he made all the throws. He had a heck of a workout.”
The trio of Spielman, Zimmer and Turner have also attended pro-day workouts for Louisville’s Teddy Bridgewater and Central Florida’s Blake Bortles.
