With just one year left on his contract, the Minnesota Vikings have given head coach Mike Zimmer a contract extension that locks him up through the end of the 2020 season.
It’s a year of security for Zimmer, who would’ve otherwise coached the 2019 Vikings on a lame-duck contract, with no security beyond the upcoming football season.
“We did exercise Coach Zimmer’s option, so he will be through 2020,” general manager Rick Spielman said Wednesday from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana.
“I don’t think, from ownership through our entire organization, that we don’t believe in Coach Zimmer. He is the right head coach to lead us going forward.”
The 62-year-old coach is 47-32-1 in five seasons with the Vikings, leading them to a pair of division titles and a trip to the NFC title game in January 2018.
High expectations for last season crumbled as the Vikings stumbled to an 8-7-1 record.
