NFL teams are setting their 53-man rosters and final cuts have to be made by 3 p.m. Central Time Tuesday. Numerous cuts are already reported, including quarterback Jake Browning.
Browning spent the entire preseason taking snaps as the backup to quarterback Kirk Cousins, but the Vikings cut Browning Tuesday.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Vikings hope to see Browning clear waivers so they can sign him to the practice squad. But as Purple Insider’s Matthew Coller points out, a practice squad player can only be elevated to the active roster twice, so rookie Kellen Mond would serve as the backup in the event that Cousins is injured during a game.
If he’s on the PS he can only be elevated twice. So I guess they keep him on the PS and then use Mond if Cousins were to get hurt in a game. A vet backup seems favorable to this https://t.co/Ivy7jhvxYZ
