The other big news out of Vikings practice Tuesday was the release of one of the team’s most popular offensive lineman.
The Vikings announced the release of center John Sullivan. It highlighted a series of roster moves on Tuesday as the team had to trim its roster to 75.
Sullivan missed last season after undergoing multiple surgeries on his back. He lost the battle for the team’s starting center job to Joe Berger, who played well while replacing Sullivan last season.
General Manager Rick Spielman said the entire organization appreciates what Sullivan has done for the franchise.
“Sullivan led our team, not only with how he played the game, but also with how he handled himself in our community. We wish John Sullivan and his family nothing but the best as they move forward.”
The Vikings drafted Sullivan in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He ranks fourth all-time among centers in franchise history with 93 regular-season starts. Before the back injuries last season, Sullivan had missed just three games from 2009-2014.
Reports began circulating Monday night the Vikings were looking to trade Sullivan, but no deal was made.
Among the other cuts the team announced Tuesday are former Gopher Theiren Cockran and former Hopkins standout Terrell Sinkfield.
