While the Gophers search for Tubby Smith’s replacement has struck out on a number of attempts to hire a big names, including Shaka Smart, Fred Hoiberg and Flip Saunders, University of Minnesota president Eric Kaler says he’s not worried about the pace of the search.
Kaler tells the Pioneer Press that he has faith in athletics director Norwood Teague to make the right hire. He also points out that the “average search is something like two weeks in this line of work” It’s been a little over a week since Smith was fired.
Marcus Fuller writes that he won’t be surprised if the Gophers hire someone who is currently an assistant coach. All of the previously named candidates are head coaches.
Jim Souhan put together a sarcastic column in the Star Tribune giving reasons why these guys might want the job: Clem Haskins, Jim Dutcher, Bo Ryan, Tom Izzo, Joel Maturi and Tim Brewster.
SB Nation has a list of more realistic names for the Gophers, but none of them have been reported as true candidates.
