Kyle Gibson threw eight shutout innings to lead the Twins over the Blue Jays, 7-0, in game one of today’s doubleheader at Target Field.
They’re playing two at the ballpark today because Wednesday’s game was snowed out.
The temperature was 31 degrees when Gibson delivered the first pitch of the game, setting a record for the coldest home game in Twins history. The previous record was set on May 2, 1967 when the Twins hosted the Yankees at Met Stadium.
Gibson was dominant from start to finish. He allowed just four hits over eight innings, in the process lowering his ERA to a microscopic 0.93. The right-hander walked one and struck out four.
Minnesota (7-7) roughed up Toronto (8-7) knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Dickey pitched for the Twins in 2009 before winning a Cy Young Award in 2012 with the New York Mets.
The Twins scored five runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Trevor Plouffe and Jason Kubel, a two-run double off the bat of Josmil Pinto and a sacrifice fly by Kurt Suzuki.
Plouffe added a sac-fly of his own in the sixth and the lead grew to seven runs on an RBI double by Chris Colabello, who increased his American League-leading RBI total to 16.
Anthony Swarzak pitched a clean ninth to end the game.
Game two of the doubleheader begins at 6:10 p.m.
