Former Twins manager Tom Kelly – who guided Minnesota to two World Series Championships – will be honored with a bronze statue outside of Target Field next season.
Kelly managed the Twins from 1986-2001.
Currently there’s five Twins players outside of Target Field that have statues: Harmon Killerbrew, Kirby Puckett, Rod Carew, Kent Hrbek and Tony Olivia. The statue will be added to the Target Field plaza.
According to the Pioneer Press’ Mike Beradino, the Twins have been floating around the idea of statue in Kelly’s honor for the past few years now.
The Twins will be reporting to spring training next month and unfortunately Kelly won’t be able to attend. He told Phill Miller of the Star Tribune, that his knees can’t keep up anymore.
It will be the first time in 47 years that Kelly won’t be taking part in an MLB spring training.
