Is it time for Kyle Gibson to come to the Twins yet? What are they waiting for? If it’s consistent quality starts, Twins Daily blogger Nick Nelson points out today that Gibson has turned in quality starts in five of his last six outings. Mike Pelfrey, meanwhile, has the highest ERA among starting pitchers in the American League, and hasn’t won since May 5.
Gibson, along with Alex Meyer and Trevor May are three top Twins prospects currently toiling in the minor leagues, and we have been tracking their progress all season.
Meyer (Nationals) and May (Phillies) came to the organization via trades over the winter; Gibson is a 2009 first-round Twins draft choice (22nd overall).
Here are the latest numbers this season, through June 18:
Kyle Gibson — Class AAA Rochester:
After 14 starts: 6-5 record, with a 3.26 ERA. After 66.2 innings pitched, he’s struck out 59 — giving up 1.16 walks/hits per inning. He’s allowed 31 earned runs on 73 hits and 27 walks.
Trevor May — Class AA New Britain:
After 14 starts: 6-3 record, with a 3.56 ERA. After 78.1 innings pitched, he’s struck out 76 — giving up 1.44 walks/hits per inning. He’s allowed 31 earned runs on 75 hits and 38 walks.
Alex Meyer — Class AA New Britain:
After 11 starts: 3-3 record, with a 3.69 ERA. After 85.2 innings pitched, he’s struck out 73 — giving up 1.31 walks/hits per inning. He’s allowed 25 earned runs on 53 hits and 27 walks. (He hasn’t pitched since June 1, due to shoulder stiffness. But a recent MRI came back negative.)
