Now that the July 31 trade deadline has come and gone, it’s time to focus on the end of August.
Over the next month, MLB teams can wheel and deal as long as players clear the waiver wire. That includes Twins first baseman Justin Morneau, who remains in Minnesota despite a month of rumors hinting that’ll he might be heading to the Orioles, Pirates or the Yankees.
“There’s more to come,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire told the Pioneer Press. “I’m sure you’ll be hearing all kinds of stuff flying around.”
“It’s not done yet,” Morneau told the Star Tribune. “It’s part of the game.”
Pioneer Press columnist Tom Powers sounds convinced not much will happen in the next month, as far as the Twins are concerned.
But he’s not blaming GM Terry Ryan for lack of hustle. Instead, he points to the roster as a whole. Nobody wanted a player in a Minnesota uniform: “That shows you what kind of rough shape the organization is in. There is little to no value here. Other than a handful of younger, core players, the Twins have nothing to offer.”
