The Twins have traded right-handed closer Fernando Rodney to the Athletics for pitching prospect Dakota Chalmers.
The move comes as a bit of a surprise since the Twins didn’t trade the 41-year-old closer before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. But Minnesota wound up trying to pass Rodney through waivers and he was claimed by the Athletics, who wound up offering Minnesota a prospect that they felt was worth pulling the trigger on.
Rodney was under team control next season, with the Twins holding the right to offer him a $4.5 million club option. Oakland now has that option.
Chalmers did not rank among Oakland’s top 30 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. He’s also out for the rest of this season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

The 21-year-old right-hander is 6-foot-3 and has a high-90s fastball. There’s a lot of potential with him considering he was a third-round draft pick out of high school in 2015.
Rodney leaves the Twins with a 3.09 ERA and 25 saves in 31 chances this season.
