The Minnesota Twins traded All-Star closer Brandon Kintzler to the Washington Nationals right before the 3 p.m. trade deadline passed on Monday.
In return, the Twins receive Washington’s No. 17 prospect, left-handed starting pitcher Tyler Watson.
According to MLB.com’s Prospect Watch, Watson has the upside to develop into a middle of the rotation starter. He’s not overpowering but is very good locating his mix of fastball, slider and change.
Kintzler is second in the American League with 28 saves to go along with a 2.78 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. He’s not a big strikeout closer, but his 53.9% ground ball rate has helped him convert 45 of his last 52 save opportunities dating back to last season.
Kintzler was due to become a free agent after the season.
