Jonathan Schoop remained red hot as he slugged a pair of homers to lead the Twins over the White Sox 8-2 Wednesday night in Chicago.
Schoop hit a three-run homer in the second inning for his 20th of the season, adding to Minnesota’s historically powerful 2019 as they became the eighth team in MLB history to have seven players with at least 20 home runs in a single season.
Jorge Polanco is one home run from joining the 20-homer club, which would put the Twins in a place by themselves in league history.
Schoop added his 21st homer – a solo shot – in the eighth inning, giving him four homers in his last three games and five in the last five games he’s played.
“When you make a mistake, they definitely hurt you,” White Sox starter Ross Detwiler said, per MLB.com. “Everybody’s seen how many home runs they have.”
Mitch Garver also launched a homer in the eighth inning to put the Twins at 258 for the season, just nine shy of breaking the MLB single-season record of 267 set by the 2018 Yankees.
Minnesota’s 138 homers on the road this season is also tied for the most in MLB history.
The victory gets the Twins to 30 games over .500 (81-51), but their lead in the AL Central remains at 3.5 games because Cleveland defeated the Tigers.
The Twins go for a sweep in Chicago Thursday at 1:10 p.m. Jose Berrios starts for the Twins against White Sox rookie right-hander, Dylan Cease.
