It sometimes seemed as if the Cleveland Indians were trying to hand a victory to the Twins Sunday afternoon. But Minnesota would have none of it, leaving 13 runners on base in a 3-1 loss to the Indians.
With four errors and a handful of other mistakes, the Plain Dealer says Cleveland “put on an awful display defensively — and still won.”
The Twins’ undoing sprang from a familiar problem: their offense had only three hits in 19 chances with runners in scoring position.
Even so, the game was tied 1-1 until the 8th inning. That’s when Cleveland’s Drew Stubbs delivered a two-out home run off of reliever Jared Burton and Nick Swisher followed with an RBI single.
Starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey allowed only one run in five innings but did walk six batters.
The Twins finished with a split on their six-game road trip that saw them visit the top two teams in their division. After a day off Monday they’ll host the Kansas City Royals for a three-game series.
