Mark Hamburger is getting another chance.
The St. Paul Saints’ pitcher and Minnesota native, who has two failed drug tests on his record in the past year, was signed by the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, according to the Pioneer Press.
Per the report, the Twins aren’t getting their hopes up with the hard-throwing right-hander.
“I guess we’ll see,” Twins’ director of minor league operations, Brad Steil said. “You have a choice: You either take him at his word or not. I know he’s made some changes in his life and he’s looking forward to getting back with an affiliated club. I think he’s earned a second chance, so to speak.”
Hamburger will be required to serve a 50-game suspension for his failed drug tests. He’s expected to join the Twins at spring training next year, and then suit up for a minor league affiliate when his suspension is over.
CBS notes that Hamburger finished with a 3.28 earned-run average in 21 starts for the Saints this summer.
Hamburger first signed with the Twins at a random tryout in 2007.
He is a graduate of Mounds View High School.
