The Twins reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent pitcher Martin Perez on Saturday, and he’s got a crazy story that we promise isn’t a bunch of a BS.
Perez, who was in the middle of his offseason after spending the 2017 season with the Texas Rangers, was injured in December 2017 when, according to Sports Illustrated, a bull at his ranch in Venezuela charged him.
He tried to get out of the way and in doing so fell and broke his right elbow, a nasty injury that required surgery.
According to the Star-Telegram, Perez had the bull slaughtered for beef shortly after the accident.
“I killed and I ate him,” Perez told the Texas newspaper last spring.
“It was good meat,” he added. “No more bull.”
PETA wasn’t pleased with the news, later releasing a story with a headline saying “Clumsy Rangers Pitcher Kills and Eats Bull out of Spite.”
On field, Perez is a left-handed who can start or come out of the bullpen. In his seven seasons with the Rangers he went 43-49 with a 4.63 ERA and would definitely be classified as a pitch-to-contact pitcher.
He went 2-7 with a 6.22 ERA last season.
